Rights Respecting School

Rights Respecting Schools

Newton Primary School is a Bronze Rights Respecting School.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award programme supports schools to embed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC or CRC) in their practice to improve well-being and help all children to realise their potential.

The Rights Respecting Champions are children from Y1-Y6 taken from the School Council(Equality Champions). They work with Miss Wallace to ensure that the whole school community knows about the rights that every child is born with and to ensure that these right are being respected. This year they will lead assemblies, Rights Respecting Days for the whole school and will also lead parent workshops.

Here are this year’s Champions:

Class charters

Every class has drawn up a charter. Here they are:

Rights Respecting Schools Mascot

The Equality Champions job last year  was to create a Rights Respecting Mascot. The children had to think of a name for their mascot and design the mascot thinking of which rights they represented. The designs were presented to pupils and parents who voted for their favourite. Here are some of the designs:

Uni the Rights Mascot

The Mascot that was chosen was then sent home each week with a selected child to help them and their parents learn about the Rights of the Child. The children are sent home with a bag containing Uni, a child friendly rights book and a workbook to make notes on what they learnt about that weekend with Uni.

Whole School Rights Days

At the beginning of a new half term, we hold a whole school Rights Day. The day is planned by the Equality Champions and Miss Wallace. For the very first rights day, it was up to the children to choose which rights they would like to focus on and they completed activities related to those rights. Going forward, the whole school will be focussing on a specific right each time in order to ensure deeper coverage of all the rights. The Equality Champions will hold an assembly at the beginning of the day to launch the focus right.  Have a look at what we got up to on our first Rights Day.

Rights Respecting Schools – Silver Aware Award

There has been a lot of work happening this academic year as we have been working towards the silver award. The assessment focuses on three strands:

  • Strand A – Teaching and learning about rights.
  • Strand B – teaching and learning through rights, looking at the school ethos and relationships.
  • Strand C – Teaching and learning for rights, looking at children’s participation so that they can feel empowered to enjoy and exercise their rights and to promote the rights of others locally and globally.

We hope to achieve the award in the Spring Term, fingers crossed!
