Newton Primary School in Porthcawl has developed an excellent reputation for music and the expressive arts. The 'Newton Singer Songwriters' journey began in 2022 when the children began to participate in additional musical performances, songwriting and recording. The school has been very successful in promoting the expressive arts curriculum in Porthcawl, offering amazing creative opportunities for the pupils both outside and within the curriculum. The group has achieved national recognition, including reaching the 2024 and 2025 UK School Songwriting Competition finals in London where they were shortlisted from over 1000 entries. The school also actively participates in local festivals where they perform original Welsh songs. Additionally, the school has released original songs for Year 6 leavers concerts and during the Christmas period where three of their songs received airplay on National Radio. All tracks are available on the major musical streaming and subscription services. The styles of music include pop, rock, dance, ballad and rap. The school has acquired a range of technical equipment such as microphones, instruments and speakers to allow members to perform independently in any location.
